Ways to prevent pregnancy complications – Pregnancy is considered as one of the important and joyous phases in the life of a woman. The news of pregnancy brings thrill and consciousness at the same time. There exists excitement for the new change but at the same time, proper care and nurturing the fetus becomes the main responsibility. In short, the phase is not an easy task and there are various ups and downs in this period.

It is altogether a different experience for everyone would be mother- in some case women experience nausea, vomiting and dizziness; but on the other handsome women have that pregnancy glow and best health of all the time. But undeniably, the common changes all women go through are- physical and emotional!

No matter how healthy a woman is, there is always some kind of complications followed by conception. And it is very much necessary to minimize these complications if cannot be avoided.

Once the pregnancy is confirmed, the woman should meet a gynecologist immediately. A diet plan, medications and required tests should be scheduled. Apart from all this, details of the clinical condition and ongoing medications should be shared to ensure no complications in the period.

Here is a list of things to avoid, so that pregnancy complications can be avoided:

Caffeine: Pregnant women should limit caffeine intake as it poses a severe risk to the pregnancy. According to studies, the caffeine amount should not be taken more than 200- 300 milligrams a day.

High amount of caffeine consumption can enhance the risk of miscarriages as well as can lead to other pregnancy complications.

It may be difficult to limit the consumption of coffee all at once, so one should start with limiting it to 1-2 cups a day.

The amount of coffee can also be reduced by combining decaffeinated coffee with the regular one. And, cut out the regular coffee eventually.

People often confuse with caffeine as coffee, however, caffeine is also present in cola, soft drinks and black tea. Hence, it is advisable to switch to decaffeinated products (which contains caffeine in smaller amount) or caffeine-free products.

Alcohol: Doctors ask to avoid the consumption of alcohol though there is no harm in having a glass of wine or a mug of beer with friends. There is no definition of safe limit to consume alcohol during pregnancy. Hence, it is advised to be cautious and drinks no alcohol at all during pregnancy. Alcohol is found to be one of the most common causes of behavioral, physical and intellectual disabilities. It can affect the growth of the fetus. Also, alcohol is passed easily to the baby, which remains concentrated in the baby’s system. This can damage the development of baby’s nervous system.

If a pregnant woman is alcoholic then it is advised to inform the medical practitioner about the same. The medical practitioner may help to avoid any complications to the baby or aid in overcoming the addiction at right time.

Medicines: Talking of medicines, it includes prescription based drugs as well as over the counter medicines that can harm the development of the fetus. The extent of harm that medicine can do depends on the dose and composition of the same. Herbal and vitamin supplements might sound harmless, but they can also interfere with the growth of the fetus.

To avoid any complications as such, it is advised to have any medicine- OTC or prescription bases- only after consulting a medical practitioner. Also, while visiting any medical practitioner, state of pregnancy should be informed in advance so that s/he keeps in mind while prescribing any medicine.  If a woman was prescribed medicine before she was pregnant for certain clinical condition which persists after pregnancy too, the medical practitioner should be consulted to weigh the risk and benefits of continuing the medicine. Cigarettes: Pregnant women who are smoking cigarette are actually allowing their fetus too, to smoke; it is as simple as that. The smoking mother passes carbon monoxide, nicotine and another chemical to the growing baby. Not just that, passive smoking harms more than active; hence, pregnant women should avoid the company of people who are smoking, which may include- family workers, colleagues and family members.

Smoking poses sever to the fetus such as-

  3. Stillbirth
  4. Asthma
  5. Low birth weight
  6. Asthma
  7. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

The above mentioned points are only some of the hazards, there are many more as such. Hence, it is advised to talk to several medical practitioners about the safety tips to be followed during pregnancy. Even one wrong step can harm the fetus or interfere with the growth of the baby.
