Basic Cat Care Tips that Can Come in Handy. Having a cat as your pet might be one of the best decision you have made in your life. However, owning a cat comes with a few responsibilities. Here are a few basic cat care tips that can make life with your pet, easy and more enjoyable:

Spend Time With your Cat Every day

Cats need a lot of stimulation and love on a daily basis. Make sure you take some time off your daily schedule to play with your cat every day. Not only will this improve her overall health and quality of life, it will also help you unwind and de-stress for a while.

Provide a Scratching post or pad

Scratching is a natural behavior of cats. If they don’t find a tree, they will use your furniture as a place to sharpen their claws. You can avoid a lot of such damage by providing your cat a scratching post or pad. A horizontal surface made out of corrugated cardboard should be good enough.

Keep litter boxes clean and inviting

Access to a clean and inviting litter box is very important if you want your cat to stay happy and comfortable. Make sure you keep it in a quiet area and clean the box on a regular basis. If you have more than one cat, you may have to keep one litter box per cat, and preferably one at each area of your house.

Use both hands while picking up your cat

You may have seen mother cats picking up their kittens by the scruff of their necks. Don’t even try to do this with your cat, especially if she is an adult. It could cause a lot of pain and injury. You should use both your hands while picking up your cat. One hand should be under her abdomen and the other should be under her chest behind her front legs.

Monitor your cat’s activities

Cats tend to chew on strings and a lot other things while playing. If you are not watching her, she might swallow it accidentally. An accident like this can even make her sick by creating an intestinal blockage. Also make sure you secure your house with a cat fence. Click here to find one.

Put up screens on all your windows

Making your home cat-safe is very important before you bring one home. Make sure all your windows have screens and if they don’t make sure your cat doesn’t have access to these windows. You never know when she might just jump off after a bird or something, seriously injuring herself in a fall.
