Laws you Should be Aware of While Towing

2 Mins read

Live in the Melbourne area? Worried about towing your vehicle? Don’t panic! We know everything there is to know about safely towing your vehicle without fear of criminal endangerment. Towing doesn’t need to be difficult when you follow our expert advice…

Without further ado, let’s find out what the Australian lawmakers have to say about towing in your area – legally, and without fear of repercussions.

Towing Means Freedom

Anyone in Victoria that knows what it is like to tow their own motorhome knows that towing allows true freedom of the open roads. Here in Victoria, we have some of the best quality of straight, drivable roads in the whole world. Our roads are so perfect that it ought to be criminal to live here without driving them. Not so wonderfully; in order to tow a caravan down these roads you need to make sure certain things are (or aren’t) happening.

So if you plan on taking a caravan-based road-trip into the outback, here are some things you should know…

Number Plates

The number of plates on your caravan must be clean, clear, and visible, at all times.

Towing Capacities

You must check with your car manufacturer regarding what weight limits you need to maintain. It is extremely important that you don’t exceed the weight limit as this could lead you to capsize turning a corner. The weight of your caravan will be written on the tow bar.

People

Nobody – under any circumstances – should be riding in a caravan that is being towed. This will get you points on your license and is widely accepted as generic rulings in most countries. America, perhaps, is one of the only exceptions.

Licensing

You must have a full license to tow, no exceptions are made. If you wish to tow a tow truck, further licensing will be needed.

The Caravan Itself

Nobody is allowed to tow a vehicle that isn’t roadworthy in Victoria – or anywhere else in Australia for that matter. If your caravan isn’t roadworthy there is a high chance you are breaking the law. Parts can break off and leave debris on the road, not to mention an unsafe vehicle being a death-trap should you need to an emergency stop.

Remember: a caravan doesn’t just need to be watertight to live in, it also needs to meet the rules of the road at all times.
